San Francisco: Alcatraz -- Military Chapel

Alcatraz Island Military Chapel

Alcatraz -- Military Chapel

The small building on the top center of the guardhouse and sally port was built by the army in the 1920's.  It was designed in the Mission Revival architectural style, and the building was given the nickname "The Chapel."

There are no records to indicate that the buildings it was ever used as a chapel.  The first floor served as living quarters for single officers while the second floor housed workshops and a hat factory.  It may also have been used as a meeting room and schoolhouse.

In 1934, the building was remodeled into housing for bachelor guards.
