San Francisco: Alcatraz -- Gardens

Alcatraz Island Gardens.

Alcatraz -- Gardens

As you walk around the Island, you can see traces of ornamental gardens, particularly at the Warden's House and on the western slope below the Cellhouse.

When the southern end of the Island is open to visitors (during the non-nesting period of the island's birds), look for the faded painted names that identify the various "children's gardens."  According to a former resident, these were planted in the 1950's by order of the Captain of the Guards who felt the children of Alcatraz had too much time on their hands and would benefit from the experience of tending the small plots of land.
