San Francisco: Alcatraz -- Barracks - Apartments

In 1905, the army used inmate labor to add three concrete stories on top of the original dock-level brick barracks built in the 1860's. The finished structure was known as Building 64. It served as quarters for soldiers assigned to prison guard duty. An Officers' Club was also housed there for a brief time. In preparation for civilian inmates, the Bureau of Prisons remodeled the barracks building. Apartments were added for correctional officers and their families. This complex included a small market and an even smaller post office. A room on the first floor that was originally used as storage for gun powder, was designated as an air raid shelter during World War II. During the federal penitentiary era, the end of the island with the apartments was fenced off for the security of the families. *** Click on each of the topics below to read about the history of Alcatraz:
