Bill and Barbara Windsor's trip 'Round
America covered 50 states and over 2,500 towns.
While we saw some major sights, such as Mount Rushmore, we were even more
interested
in seeing
the wide variety of "roadside attractions" developed by local
entrepreneurs... and other not-so-famous attractions.

| The First Alligator Farm | FL | The granddaddy of all roadside creature attractions. | Drove by -- no time due to all the problems of Day 3. |
| One Log House | FL | A home built entirely out of one redwood log. | Missed it. |
| Fountain of Youth | FL | Major drinking to be done here. | Enjoyed it. We got water, too. |
| Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse | FL | St. Augustine has a lot of the oldest stuff. | Saw it. |
| Oldest Store | FL | More old stuff in St. Augustine, the first permanent settlement. | Saw it. |
| Hamburger Hall of Fame | FL | In someone's home; by appointment only. | Missed it. |
| Ron Jon's Surf Shop | FL | Humongous surf shop; a well-known landmark in Florida. | Missed it. |
| Home of The National Enquirer | FL | The home of very "creative" people. | Tried to find it. |
| Wolfsonian Museum | FL | Cool museum of all types of Americana stuff. | Saw it -- very cool. |
| Coral Castle | FL | Incredible home and furniture carved from coral. | Saw it -- amazing accomplishment. |
| Jule's Undersea Lodge | FL | Underwater motel. Dive down 25 feet to check in. | Saw it. Unusual. |
| World's Largest Lobster | FL | Sorry, but we'll wait until Maine to eat a smaller lobster. | Surprisingly impressive. |
| Perky Bat Tower | FL | A man built a place for bats to live, but mosquitoes claimed it. | Enjoyed it. Funny story. |
| World's Largest Conch Shell | FL | Where else but in the capital of the Conch Republic. | Missed it. |
| Hemingway Cats | FL | Hemingway had cats with an extra toe; many descendants remain. | Thoroughly enjoyed seeing the cats. |
| Southernmost point in USA | FL | Key West -- we'll also hit the Western, Northern, and Easternmost points. | We were there. |
| Green Flash | FL | Green flashing phenomenon in the sky in The Keys. | Missed it. |
| Jungle Larry's Caribbean Gardens | FL | Roadside attraction. | Missed it. |
| Ringling Museum | FL | The world famous Ringling Brothers Circus museum. | Missed it -- been there before. |
| Redneck Riviera | FL | Not so nice a term for the beaches from Panama City to Pensacola. Home of the infamous "Girls Gone Wild." | Enjoyed it. |
| World's Largest Beach Ball | FL | Pensacola's claim to fame. | Missed it. |
| Cemetery Tour | LA | New Orleans is one of the best places to tour cemeteries. | Too tired to tour. |
| Oldest Ranchlands in USA | TX | Near Laredo. | Saw them. |
| Spinach Capital of the World | TX | Beautiful Crystal Springs, Texas | Not a lot to see, but I was there. |
| Popeye Statue | TX | Prominently situated in the Spinach Capital of the World. | Saw it. |
| Judge Roy Bean Saloon | TX | Infamous judge. | Saw it. |
| World's Largest Horseshoe | TX | We're just sorry we can't make it to the town of Muleshoe as well. | It took some undercover work, but I managed to see it. |
| Birthplace of Roy Orbison | TX | Don't Wink or you'll miss it. | Saw it. |
| UFO Museum | NM | UFO's really did land in Roswell; this museum proves it. | Thoroughly enjoyed it. |
| Town Named Pie Town | NM | Pie-Town New Mexico; we are driving way out of the way to eat! | I drove 600 miles, but I made it. |
| Town Named by a TV Show | NM | A contest caused this city to be renamed Truth or Consequences. | Glad I went. |
| Boot Hill Cemetery | AZ | Famous gunfighters are buried here. | I saw the graves. |
| The Thing | AZ | Roadside attraction with an amazing assortment of stuff. | Missed it. The Thing was on the interstate, and I was on the 2-lane. |
| Old Tucson Movie Set | AZ | Great western town movie set that has been used in many movies. | Missed it due to eye injury -- but I've been several times before. |
| Biosphere II | AZ | Missed it. | |
| Ostrich Farm | AZ | Drove by. | |
| Hottest Spot in the Country | AZ | Gila Bend. Needles Arizona also wins this distinction quite often. | I was there. |
| Yuma Territorial Prison | AZ | Closed for the day, but I looked in. | |
| Ghost Town | AZ | We'll visit a number of ghost towns in TX, NM, and AZ. | I saw many. |
| Center of the World Pyramid | CA | Bizarre. | I was there -- spooky. |
| Birthplace of Cher | CA | I don't like Cher's anti-war, anti-President Bush stand. | I didn't stop due to Cher's politics. |
| Largest Wooden Trestle in the World | CA | Missed it. I looked, but didn't see it (dark). | |
| Home of Tecate Beer | CA | Drink it with lime. | Missed it. Drove nearby. |
| Del Mar Racetrack | CA | This racetrack has been seen in a number of movies. | Missed it. |
| Legoland | CA | Drove by. | |
| Home of the Swallows | CA | San Juan Capistrano. | Saw it. |
| World's Largest US Flag | CA | Ski Dempski's place. | Saw the house for the flag. |
| Skinniest House in America | CA | It's in Long Beach. | Missed it. |
| World's Largest Donut | CA | Randy's Donuts in Los Angeles has the biggest. Sad that zoning ordinances in most locations will no longer allow this type of sign. | Loved it. |
| Surfrider Beach | CA | Frankie and Annette filmed their beach movies here. | Missed it. |
| LA County Coroner's Gift Shop | CA | Gotta see it to believe it. | Missed it. |
| Tail O' The Pup Hot Dog Stand | CA | A tribute to architectural splendor -- hot dog stand shaped like a hot dog. | Couldn't find it. |
| Start / end of Route 66 | CA | Venice Beach -- lots of great sights. | We were there. |
| Birthplace of the Hell's Angels | CA | Fontana...on Route 66. | We were there. |
| Exotic World | CA | A museum dedicated to the art of striptease. | Missed it. |
| Famous Erin Brokovich Town | CA | Hinkley, California. | Sad, but we saw it. |
| Hottest Spot in the Country Part 2 | CA | Needles. Gila Bend, AZ also wins this honor at times. | We were there. Not very hot. |
| London Bridge | AZ | It put Lake Havasu City on the map. | Very impressive. |
| International Bioregional Old Route 66 Visitor Center and Preservation Foundation | AZ | With a name like this, it's gotta be good. | Best Route 66 displays by far! |
| Don't Forget This Town | AZ | Winona -- made famous by the song "Route 66" -- "Don't Forget Winona." | We didn't forget it, but there's little or nothing there. |
| Famous Corner | AZ | "Standin' on the corner in Winslow, Arizona..." -- Lyrics from "Take It Easy" by The Eagles; the band donated money to establish a monument. | Thoroughly enjoyed Winslow! |
| Tinkertown | NM | Incredible tinker-toy sized western town. | Fabulous -- one of my favorite sights. |
| Cadillac Ranch | TX | Cadillacs buried in the ground a la Stonehenge. | Still cool. |
| Prairie Dog Town | TX | Infamous prairie dog home at McKenzie Park in Lubbock, Texas. Fortunately, the city residents (known as the Lucky Me's due to a 1960's Chamber of Commerce campaign - "Lucky Me I Live in Lubbock) now claim Buddy Holly and Bobby Knight as the city's claim to fame. | Unique! |
| Leaning Tower of Water | TX | Amazing what folks will do to get on the map; this Pisa-like leaning water tower is in Groom, Texas. | Saw it. |
| National Route 66 Museum | OK | There are more Route 66 Museums than gas stations, but this is THE national one in Elk City, Oklahoma. | Not as good as the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum. |
| World's Largest Praying Hands | OK | At Oral Roberts University. | Very impressive. |
| Originator of the Bumper Sticker | MO | Merramec Caverns. | Saw the grounds -- claustrophobic. |
| Boyhood Home of Rush Limbaugh | MO | Cape Girardeau -- also where Barbara's parents met and fell in love. | I liked Cape Girardeau. |
| Elvis Galore. | TN | Memphis has all kinds of funky Elvis attractions. We'll be looking for the funkiest. | I couldn't find any funky Elvis attractions, but I really enjoyed Graceland. |
| Twitty City | TN | It's just fun to say. | Missed it. |
| World's Largest Ketchup Bottle | IL | Collinsville, Illinois. | I didn't expect much, but this was big and very impressive. |
| World's Largest Ball of Twine | KS | There are three balls of twine claiming to the the largest, but after extensive research, we've named the ball in Cawker City, Kansas to be the biggest. | This was the most important sight to see on the trip, and I loved it. Huge ball of twine that continues to grow as folks leave twine in a box next to the ball. |
| Midway | KS | Kinsley, Kansas is 1,561 miles from New York and San Francisco. | I was there. Not much more to say. |
| The Wizard of Oz | KS | Liberal, Kansas is where Dorothy was from. | This was way off the route. I saw Dorothy's House and the "Land of Oz" as well as recent tornado damage. |
| In Cold Blood | KS | Holcomb, Kansas is where the In Cold Blood murders took place. | We haven't been seeing macabre sights such as this, but I drove out to the house as it was just off the route. |
| Liberace Museum | NV | In Vegas. | Lots of glitz. Candleabras and sequined costumes galore. |
| Elvis-A-Rama Museum | NV | Las Vegas has SO MUCH to offer. | Not huge, but a very impressive stash of Elvis memorabilia from the biggest private Elvis collector. Fun impersonator show. |
| World's Largest Clam | CA | Pismo Beach, California | We went in to ask the Chamber of Commerce where it was. They just laughed. When I walked out, we were parked next to it. |
| Madonna Inn | CA | Voted the best place to spend the night on a vacation. | Fabulous theme room place in San Luis Obispo, California. Stay there! |
| World's First Motel | CA | First motel anywhere in the world was in San Luis Obispo, California. | Closed, but still there. Adobe-style architecture. |
| World's Largest Chess Set | CA | Morro Bay, California offers this and a huge rock. | Big chess board; they keep the chess pieces locked up. |
| James Dean Memorial | CA | Located on the highway where he crashed. | Way out of the way and hard to find, but we went and we found. |
| Butterfly Zone | CA | Missed it. | |
| World's Largest Artichoke | CA | I like artichokes and was disappointed to learn it's made of cement. | Missed it. |
| Mystery Spot | CA | It's a mystery. | Missed it. |
| House of Doors | CA | Missed it. | |
| World's Largest Coca-Cola Bottle | CA | Missed it. | |
| Doggie Diner | CA | We think this is a diner for dogs. We'll find out and report back. | We found it -- perhaps the last remaining doggie head sculpture. |
| Kendall Jackson Winery | CA | Barbara likes Kendall Jackson wines, so we will tour and taste. | Missed it. |
| Drive-Thru Tree | CA | They've actually cut a car-sized hole in the base of a redwood. | Fun to see, and the PT Cruiser did just fit. |
| World's Largest Wooden Totem Pole | CA | I've seen several. The CA pole was tall, but skinny. | |
| World's Largest Redwood Mill | CA | It takes a big mill to process redwoods. | Couldn't see much at night. |
| World's Largest Hammer | CA | I guess it takes a big hammer to build big totem poles and other stuff with redwoods processed in the mill. | Not huge, but built like a hammer out of the correct materials, so it is real. |
| World's Tallest Tree | CA | Big. | |
| Trees of Mystery | CA | Loved Paul Bunyan and Babe. | |
| Prehistoric Gardens | OR | Amazing what an entrepreneur can dream up as a tourist attraction. | Lots of dinosaurs. |
| Westernmost Point of Land in USA | OR | Two down and two to go. | I was there. |
| World's Smallest Navigable Harbor | OR | Pretty place. | |
| Tillamook Cheese Factory | OR | Biggest tourist attraction in Oregon. | Very enjoyable. |
| Lewis & Clark Campsite | OR | Not much to see. | |
| Rainforest | WA | You don't have to go south to see beautiful rainforests. | Green and damp. |
| Largest Building in the World | WA | Boeing has a HUGE building to build airplanes in. | Saw it from the highway. |
| Largest Concrete Structure in the World | WA | It's a dam big structure. | Big, big dam, and very nice people. |
| Gehrke Windmill Garden | WA | One man's life work. Great to see it restored and living on. | |
| Giant Radio Flyer Wagon | WA | Very big and cool. Boz came down the slide in the handle. | |
| World's Largest Milk Bottle | WA | We couldn't find it. | |
| Friendliest Dam Town in the Whole World | MT | Not friendly. | |
| Coldest Spot in the USA | MT | Cut Bank is undisputed as the coldest spot in the USA. | 80-degrees when we were there in the Coldest Spot in the Nation. |
| World's Largest Penguin | MT | It's big. | |
| Flintstone's Bedrock City | SD | Clever theme park. | |
| Deadwood | SD | Another great western town. | Nicely themed casino town. |
| World's Largest Cow | ND | Huge, and really an excellent sculpture. | |
| Earl Bunyan Statue | ND | The first of many Paul Bunyan statues. | Still laughing about this one. |
| Underground Missile Silos | ND | We'll let you know if we see any pointed toward North Korea or France. | We think we saw one. |
| Geographical Center of North America | ND | I wonder if the toilets flush in the opposite direction or anything. | We were there -- lots of "centers" in America. |
| World's Largest Northern Pike | MN | A big fish. | Nice, but the folks in Garrison were even better. |
| Restaurant Inside a Fish | MN | A place to eat big fish. | We were there. |
| Judy Garland Museum | MN | Yellow Brick Road nearby. | Closed early, but we saw the ruby slippers and the Yellow Brick Road. |
| Largest Freshwater Port in USA | MN | Lake Superior is massive. | |
| Birthplace of Bob Dylan | MN | Duluth, Minnesota. I lived there at the age of 5; I wonder if Bob was one of my playmates. Surely he must have been. | We saw Bob's childhood home. We lived 39 blocks apart, so it is unlikely that we knew each other. |
| 52-Foot Statue of Hiawatha | WI | Really, really tall. World's Largest Indian. | |
| Paul Bunyan Statue | WI | More Bunyan. | Bunyan #2. |
| Paul Bunyan & Babe Statue | MI | Yet another Bunyan and his sidekick. | Saw it from a distance in the rain.. |
| Paul Bunyan Made of Car Parts | MI | Unique Bunyan. | The best Bunyan so far in terms of artistic quality. |
| Motown Museum | MI | Great music at this place. | We were there, but it was closed. |

| Smallest Capitol in USA | VT | Hint -- it's in Vermont. | I was there -- tiny Montpelier. Very impressive capitol building. |
| Ben & Jerry's Factory | VT | They should rename the town Cherry Garcia. | Lots of fun, and the ice cream was really fresh. |
| Portrait of Abe Lincoln Made from 6,399 Dried Insects | VT | Could win Best Use of Insects in our Best & Worst Competition. | Bug Art -- amazing. |
| World's Largest Wooden Indian | ME | It was dark. I saw it, but my photos did not turn out. | |
| Ear Muff Capital of the World | ME | Ear muffs were invented here. | I was there, but it was dark.. |
| Northeasternmost Point in USA | ME | Three of four. | Missed it. |
| 2-Story Outhouse | ME | There's a three-story outhouse elsewhere in the state, but we won't detour. | Missed it. |
